The Black Currant

Relative of Ribes in the saxifrage family. The types which are cultivated in Norway descend from R. nigrum, which grows wild in Europe and central Asia. They have a distinctive scent coming from small nodes, especially on young leaves. The berries are black with a strong, remarkable aroma. They are rich in pectin and vitamin-A and especially rich in vitamin-C. They can be cultivated as far north as the district of Troms. Both the clusters and berries are smaller on branches which are more than three years old. Average annual yield per bush is about three kilograms (6.5 lbs.)
