The Black Currant
Relative of Ribes in the saxifrage family. The types which are
cultivated in Norway descend from R. nigrum, which grows wild in
Europe and central Asia. They have a distinctive scent coming from small
nodes, especially on young leaves. The berries are black with a strong,
remarkable aroma. They are rich in pectin and vitamin-A and especially
rich in vitamin-C. They can be cultivated as far north as the district
of Troms. Both the clusters and berries are smaller on branches which are
more than three years old. Average annual yield per bush is about three
kilograms (6.5 lbs.)
